Latest Sitka Weather

The Sitka Weather: Dress right

Air temps vary throughout the season, typically Sitka’s temperatures range in the 50’s and 60’s.  Weather can vary from bluebird sun to overcast drizzle and the occasional heavy rain.  We recommend dressing in layers. Alaska Adventures will have rain gear onboard for their guests, so that's one less thing you'll need to pack for your trip. During the summer, the temperatures can get warmer, but remember you will be on the water, where the air temperatures are typically cooler than on land.

Preventing Seasickness

If seasickness is a concern for anyone in your group, it has been our experience that in most cases the commonly prescribed “patch” of Scopolamine is extremely effective. For those whose motion sickness can possibly be severe, talk to you doctor about the combination of Promethazine & Ephedrine. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and a 80 lb. halibut.

King Salmon (Chinook)

The chinook salmon is nicknamed king salmon in Alaska. The official Alaska state fish, they are the largest of the salmon species on the west coast. The king salmon generally live 5 to 7 years, and typical king salmon weighs 19-21 pounds.  Kings in excess of 30 lbs or more are not uncommon. Kings feed on insects when they are young during their fresh water period and once they enter the ocean they feed on plankton, herring and other bait fish. The largest king salmon that has ever been caught was 126 lbs near Petersburg Alaska in 1949.

They are a hardy fighting fish, and are caught either mooching or trolling. If you've never experienced a mighty king salmon bending your rod, now is the time to give it a try. They are excellent eating fish.

Silver Salmon (Coho)

Silver_SalmonCoho salmon have bright silver sides and have small black spots on their back. Typical Silvers weigh from 8 to 12 pounds although on occassion our guests land fish that weigh in excess of 15 lbs.  Their length ranges from 25 to 35 inches.

One of the most sought after species of salmon, they spend up to three years in salt water before returning to the fresh water to spawn. The peak prime time for fishing for silvers is from mid-July to early September.

Trolling and Mooching are both effective methods for catching Silvers. Next to King Salmon, Silvers are one of the most popular fish for the dinner table.
